An Open Letter To Those Struggling With Sin and Addiction

April 14, 2014 Rodlie Ortiz, D.Min.

Come close.

You need to hear this.

If you’ve ever struggled with sin and addiction then you need to pay attention and listen:

God can give you the victory over your particular sin.

This is a controversial statement, I know. I’ve met with people who are convinced that they’ll always be in bondage to some particular vice or sin. Some have struggled deeply and fallen repeatedly, and so they think it’s something that they’ll always deal with.

But it’s not true. God can help you overcome.

How can I speak with such confidence? Because God has helped me overcome many different things. There’s certain things that I’ve struggled with that I no longer struggle with. Does that mean that I’m no longer tempted with anything? I am still tempted. As they say, “Another level, another devil.” When God has given you victory over something, and the devil knows that it’s beyond his reach, he’ll find other and new ways to tempt you. That’s just the way it is. But, day by day, God can help you with those as well.

Let me be clear: I will always have sinful tendencies until the day that Jesus comes. But that doesn’t mean that I will not be growing and overcoming specific things along the way.

So how can you overcome? While there are many different factors involved, the central one is consistent time with God every single day. By the way, for some great resources on this subject, check out the series Bondage Breaker by Pastor Dwight Nelson. Here’s a great quote from one of the messages in this series:

“The devil gets you in sin (You need this) and holds you in (God won’t take you back) with lies.” -Dwight Nelson.

There’s just something about spending intentional and consistent time with God every single day that changes you. Really. The more time you spend with Him, the greater hatred and disgust He can give you towards sin.

So please, please, please…believe me when I say that God can give you victory. You need to know that. You need to know that it’s possible. You don’t always have to struggle. Will you believe that?

Would you like to take a step in the right direction? Here’s the process that I use for my devotions. Just start and all of heaven will be celebrating and coaching you along.
