Archives For technology

In this post I detailed the reasons why I moved from Dreamhost. In short, it’s because they have horrible customer service. The question is how. I consider myself to be quite technically adept, but moving from one web host to another is just a little out of my comfort zone and I would rather someone else oversee the process.

Thankfully, I had heard about a great site called Odesk.com. This is a site where you can outsource all kinds of technical projects all over the world.

Allow me to walk you through some of the steps.

If you have a blog or website or are ever thinking of starting one you need to pay attention.

Changing a host is not something you want to do very often. It’s akin to moving to a different house, and I don’t know anyone who actually likes the process of looking for cardboard boxes, beginning to pack, renting a truck, asking friends to help you move, then loading everything in a truck, and then doing the reverse once you get to your new house. Ok, perhaps it’s not quite as burdensome as physically moving to a different house, but I think you get my point.

It’s not something you want to do too often.

When I first began my journey in the blogging world I was using Blogger/Blogspot, a self-hosted solution, which really doesn’t give much options. I used that for about two years before finally making the big jump to Dreamhost. Somebody recommended them and I bit. Unfortunately, it was a mistake.

Here’s why I left Dreamhost and moved to Bluehost.

I haven’t owned any of the previous iPad’s. I’ve owned an iPhone ever since the first one came out. I’ve had a Macbook for years before that. There just didn’t seem to be a need, I figured, if I already owned both separate Apple devices, to use an iPad. I couldn’t imagine how I would actually want to use it. Then, this past Christmas, my mother offered to buy me an iPad mini and I did not protest.

Before I share some of the ways that I’ve been using it, I’d like to quickly address three issues that you might have questions about.

Size: Before I purchased the Mini, I wanted to make sure that it would be the right size. I read reviews, went to the Apple store multiple times and handled the full size iPad and the Mini. I tried to imagine myself doing certain tasks with the full-size iPad, but when I compared it to the Mini, it was just about over. It’s so light compared to the full size iPad. It feels really good in the hand. You can hold it in one hand, in fact, which can’t really be said for a regular iPad for any extended period of time.

As you may have noticed, there’s movement on this site again! Before I started writing again recently it had been around 240 days since my previous post. In the world of writing and blogging, that’s sort of a sin. But I had some good coaching conversations with people, I had someone help me resolve a tech issue I was having with the site itself, and now I’m invigorated and back at it.

I’ve been thinking through this process and I want to share with you what’s coming so that you’re not caught off guard.

1. Writing three times per week. I know for some people this might sound like bad news, but hopefully you all will find the content to be helpful and useful. Just so you know, I have the goal of having new posts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Wednesday’s, though, I’d like to put up some kind of video feature. So I’ll have very little writing, just a video that I think you’ll find helpful along with a few comments.

A Visual Theology

I’m a visual person. If I can read a name I can most certainly remember it. The same goes for visualizing abstract or theological concepts. If I can see a graphic with how things are interrelated, I can better understand it.

Chris Challies has done just that.

Here’s one on Philippians 4:8

I’m a big fan of stop-motion photography and movies. In this age of slick video there’s just something a little retro, but a lot of fun about this.

Here’s an app so that you can do it on your iPhone. It’s called Frames. Check out the video below.

And by the way, here below is an example I made in about 5 minutes on my iPhone:

I’m sure someone should be able to find some creative uses for this in a church context, right?
