We’re Building A Water Well! (and why)

Did you hear the news? Our church is building a water well! See the final page here.

That’s right, this past Christmas we partnered with Charity: Water to build our very own well. In the next post I’ll address how we actually did  it and give all the details with lessons learned, but for now I just wanted to share a brief nugget on why we set out to do this.

There were a few people that actually didn’t support this project and spoke out against it. They thought we should use the $5,000 needed to build the well and use it for  local projects. Here’s the main reason I disagreed. I think every church, yes, needs to have local plans and goals. This is the stuff we work on every day. It’s true that part of our tithe dollars goes towards international mission, but most people on the local church level don’t end up seeing the end result of their tithe dollars.

That’s why I think that sometimes you have to dream of something on an international scale. Outside of your borders. Something to make you uncomfortable. Something to stretch the people and yourself. You see, we have this simple vision. It’s not just about building a water well somewhere. Not only do we want to do that, but we want to adopt the community wherever the well is built. And about a year after the well is built, we want to go back with a mission team and help them build a school, church, or to help address any other need they might have. We want to build a relationship with this community, and hopefully have the opportunity to introduce them to Jesus.

So that’s why we’re building this well. It’s been incredibly exciting. In the next post I’ll share a little of our journey to actually get there.
