Using Twitter As A Command Center To Do Good

People use Twitter and Facebook in all sorts of ways. Some people use it to just post personal things that they’re up to. Some people just pass along links of things that they like. Others do a combination of both.

But I’ve never seen anyone online utilize Twitter the way that Shaun King has.

He’s the pastor of Courageous Church in downtown Atlanta, and several months ago he launched a campaign called TwitChange that held a celebrity charity auction raising over $500,000 for disabled kids in Haiti. Over 150 celebrities ended up becoming involved and it was a huge success.

Well, in the last day or two I’ve been observing something really interesting happening on his Twitter feed. Better than trying to explain it, let me just show the list of tweets so you can see the narrative.

Wow. So there he is…literally at the helm of this crisis…through Twitter. And people have been responding. The story is not done yet so make sure to follow him on Twitter or check out his blog at www.ShaunInTheCity.com for more details.

But here’s the question that this makes me think about: “what are we doing with the influence that God has given us?” He has over 10,ooo followers on Twitter, and he’s not afraid to stick his neck out to move them.

There’s nothing wrong with sharing about our personal life, but what if we could harness social media for something much more powerful like changing people and the world? That’s the kind of stuff that really inspires and moves me, anyway.

Thoughts?

Yeah, quite incredible. Sad thing is that it’s not over yet. I sent him a tweet to see if there’s anything I can do from Tampa. Trying to do what I can to get him a little more exposure on this issue.
